What is School Based Occupational Therapy?

What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?

Occupational Therapists (OT) are licensed and board-certified healthcare professionals who provide therapy to individuals based on engagement in meaningful activities (occupations) in order to help create or restore participation in the meaningful activities of one’s daily life. OT’s have completed studies in human development, psychology, mental health, advanced anatomy & physiology, physical pathology, kinesiology, neuroscience, and therapeutic treatment with a focus on restoring and/or creating increased independence for people receiving therapy.

In the school based setting, the focus of occupational therapy is to help the student access his or her educational curriculum and environment through a unique blend of skilled treatment strategies.  Through effective collaboration with IEP and Child Study Team members, therapists use their skills to modify the environment, create system supports, and provide specific treatment to support the success of all students in the school setting.

The goal of OT services is to assist the student in accessing their academic curriculum and physical school environment, thereby increasing their independence, participation, and well-being as they fulfill their roles as students in regards to academic, social and life skills functioning.
